It used to be thought that because changing testosterone levels affect DHT levels in men resulting in baldness, that testosterone levels in women would affect their hair the same way, but ironically, most women with hair loss and baldness have normal testosterone levels. The bottom line is that no one knows how to stop hair thinning or loss. There is a lot of speculation and theory, but no cure. There are treatments, however, that have shown promising results.
It is important for you to be a smart consumer. Do your research, ask lots of questions and investigate all options before doing anything expensive and/or rash. We invite you to visit our office in Kansas City, and have a one-on-one, low- pressure consultation with Sue Kiger, our in-house Registered Nurse Consultant, and get answers to all of your questions. We think you’ll find that because Coltivare is designed specifically for women, you’ll feel more comfortable and at ease exploring your options.
Unlike male pattern baldness, there can be many reasons why women lose their hair. Yes, it can be hereditary, but it can also be caused by hormonal changes, medication, illness or aging. Your hair replacement options will depend on the cause of your hair loss. We have several different treatment options available:
Finasteride, Dutasteride and Ketoconazole – These drugs are designed to reduce the level of 5-Alpha Reductase, an enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT, resulting in hair strand thinning. These are used on women if their testosterone levels are elevated. You must check with your doctor or endocrinologist to see if you have elevated levels of testosterone.
Minoxidil – originally used as a treatment for hypertension, this peripheral vasodilator is applied topically to the scalp. Research is inconclusive as to exactly how it stimulates hair growth, but it is has proven effective on both men and women.
LLLT – Low Level Laser Therapy – A special low-level laser that doesn’t harm the scalp or skin but delivers visible red light to the scalp. Because the laser light does not cut or burn the skin, the therapeutic light-energy is absorbed by the cells and helps them to repair themselves. One theory is that it stimulates the production of energy at the cellular level, thus improving the function of the cell. Some recipients have reported a tingling sensation in their scalp. This LLLT light therapy may also increase blood flow to the treated area.
Topical Caffeine – Caffeine applied to the scalp has been shown to help block the production of DHT.
Hair Prosthetics – If none of the above treatments prove effective for hair growth, Coltivare specializes in full head prosthetics. Our full head prosthetics integrate with your own hair to create a full head of hair that’s invisible to the casual observer. Unlike a wig, you can treat your hair as if it’s your own when swimming, bathing and styling. We use only cuticle grade hair that looks smoother and lasts longer than lower quality strands.
